- Don't blame, take responsibility: It is a leader's responsibility to establish a team mentality, encourage people to take responsibility for what they do and see failures as their failure.
- Become aware: Self-awareness allows you to rely on who you are not on who you want people to think you are
- Respect everyone: Everyone is a mini-expert in what they do, respect this. Utilise everyone and encourage people to reach their potential.
- Value your work and prioritise your career: By taking on the role of leader you become responsible for everyone you lead. This means that the more you grow as a leader the better you serve everyone you lead.
- Be sceptical, there are personal and professional tricksters: Being open and empowering and collaborative does not mean becoming a 'soft-touch'. You can demand respect, honesty and a fair days work from everyone you bring into your team.
- Make peace with your own weaknesses: Becoming an 'authentic leader' means learning from your mistakes and building upon them.
- Be happy: Everyone looks to their leader for motivation, inspiration and security. The more motivated, inspired and confident you are the more they can draw from you.

I believe in a defined team-oriented structure where leaders lead, managers manage and 'workers' work. In sports this structure is almost always based on experience, merit and ability.
