Leadership & Responsibility

Suggested Video.
Leaders Need High Emotional IQ to Succeed:
  • Leader as 'hero' is a flawed approach.
  • Leader self-interest over organisation is a bad position for the organisation.
  • Leadership needs to be developed.
  • Leaders need talent around them.
  • Money is not the only motivator.
  • Company mission and values are important.
  • Align, Empower, Serve & Collaborate.
  • Avoid hierarchical structures of management:  "Be with the troops".
Wellness.
  • Don't blame, take responsibility: It is a leader's responsibility to establish a team mentality, encourage people to take responsibility for what they do and see failures as their failure.
  • Become aware:  Self-awareness allows you to rely on who you are not on who you want people to think you are
  • Respect everyone:  Everyone is a mini-expert in what they do, respect this.  Utilise everyone and encourage people to reach their potential.
  • Value your work and prioritise your career:  By taking on the role of leader you become responsible for everyone you lead.  This means that the more you grow as a leader the better you serve everyone you lead.
  • Be sceptical, there are personal and professional tricksters:  Being open and empowering and collaborative does not mean becoming a 'soft-touch'.  You can demand respect, honesty and a fair days work from everyone you bring into your team.
  • Make peace with your own weaknesses:  Becoming an 'authentic leader' means learning from your mistakes and building upon them.
  • Be happy:  Everyone looks to their leader for motivation, inspiration and security.  The more motivated, inspired and confident you are the more they can draw from you.

What's Next?

I believe in a defined team-oriented structure where leaders lead, managers manage and 'workers' work.  In sports this structure is almost always based on experience, merit and ability.

Birth-right and entitlement are things of the past, even the modern 'Baron's' of the sports world have enough sense (mostly) to employ experts and stay away from day-to-day issues.
With this in mind a modern leader needs to consider the -
  • Need to care.
  • Strength that comes from knowing yourself and your team.
  • Relationship between power and responsibility.
  • Dominance of thinking 'us' over 'me'.
  • Power of listening to critical feedback.
  • Need for transparency.
  • Role in building organisational trust.
  • Reasons leaders lead not manage.
  • Why managers should not be expected to lead.

The content of this website is based on my experience, education and the hundreds of coaching sessions I have delivered online.

I am also a representative of an FCA regulated company which means that my financial education activities fall under the rules of a very powerful consumer protection body.

The FCA is the UK's financial regulatory body with a wide range of powers designed to protect consumers from firms that do not meet the desired standards.  The FCA can; stop firms and individuals from conducting regulated activities.  Fine firms and individuals who break the FCA rules.  Make any action taken against firms and individuals public.  Bring criminal proceedings where warranted.  The full scope of their powers can be found in the Decision procedure and penalties manual (DEPP).
