Why People Need Recognition

Why it is all about personal recognition:
Dale Carnegie wrote about the need we all have to be recognised/appreciated and the extremes some will go to, to satisfy that need. |
|
- Respect everyone: We do not have time to find out about everyone we meet. Taking a default position based on a universal respect for all life will carry us through most of life's difficulties.
- Be yourself, don't flatter or fake affection: Recognition only means something if it comes from a respected person, is truthful and delivered with sincerity.
- Make peace with your own weaknesses and the weaknesses of everyone around you: Perfection is an illusion. Everyone has their flaws, withholding recognition of the good because of the bad is myopic.
- Be happy: Borrowing from the Pharrell Williams song - for those bringing me bad news; don't waste my time I'm happy.
What's Next?
First, two things for you to consider -
In 2013 The Harvard Business Review carried an article entitled, 'The Big Benefits of a Little Thanks' based on the findings of Francesca Gino and Adam Grant. The article covers a lot of ground but the passage that caught my eye was based on the idea that helpers feel more valued when they are thanked for their contribution.
Just saying thank you had a remarkable effect on the willingness of others to help beyond what was expected of them. So utilising the power of recognition could be as simple as saying 'Thank You' whenever and wherever appropriate.
